Reporting to the Manager, Entrepreneurial Services, this position is responsible for support to the established small business sector in Brampton and the implementation of a range of activities in order to meet the City’s strategic goals for a prosperous and vibrant community.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Small Business Advice & Facilitation.  Respond to established small business issues and consult  with clients to determine their needs, progress and appropriate strategies for business success. Advise clients on all aspects of business, including feasibility and risk assessment, business model development, market research and financial planning. Review and critique business plans. Conduct analysis and apply conclusions to diagnose issues that inhibit business growth.   Conduct research to address the unique needs of individual clients.  Build long-term relationships and maintain active contact with clients. Track inquiries and maintain client records in CRM database. Monitor progress and report metrics/statistics monthly.
  2. Prepare and disseminate information. Research emerging trends and best practices and maintain up-to-date information on the small business sector. Maintain current knowledge of local economic trends and policies which impact business. Deliver seminars and facilitate workshops based on industry trends and small business needs. Disseminate information and promotional literature to clients. Prepare formal responses to ad hoc information requests and special small business initiatives. Prepare reports, presentations, speaking notes and information requests to both internal and external parties. Deliver public speaking presentations to business associations on various small business topics. Ensure all information is accurate, consistent and maintains corporate standards and legislative requirements.
  3. Project leadership. Takes the lead in projects that feature special events planning, liaising with others around and outside the City, and delegate coordination. Leads projects to implement other marketing and revenue-generating activities such as special events, sponsorship etc.   Develops marketing plans that will engage local business owners that will sustain continuous growth and development.  Benchmarks and stays knowledgeable on trends and community needs and makes recommendations for future networking and partnerships.  Act as a liaison to develop programs and promote government initiatives that encourage successful business start-ups and support business growth. Identify local business development opportunities and develop strategies for existing business to expand and grow. Build relationships and maintain active contact with agencies that support economic development.
  4. Marketing & Promotion. Promote the services of the Entrepreneur Centre to entrepreneurs and established small business owners. Apply research to determine best ways to reach target audiences. Deliver presentations to post-secondary educational institutions and business associations regarding the small business services available through the Economic Development Office.  Compile articles for both internal and external readership and participate in speaking engagements within the community.  Promote Brampton at events, functions and tradeshows.
  5. Liaise and present. Attends organization meetings and liaise with community leaders, members of City Council, business leaders, staff in a positive, diplomatic, pro-active and responsive manner. Appears before large and small groups and deliver presentations. 

Selection Criteria

Education

  • High School (Grade 12) plus an additional program of three (3) to four (4) years in Business Administration or equivalent

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years relevant experience in a customer service focused environment preferably in public sector environment
  • Knowledge of Brampton business community is preferred

Requirement License 

  • Must possess a valid non-probationary Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and the use of a personal vehicle

Other Skills and Assets: 

  • Full or partial completion of Ec.D. designation through EDAC an asset
  • Superior customer service/public relations skills coupled with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent research and analysis skills;
  • Computer and data management skills, Proficient in MS Office suite-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, CRM Database
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills; comfortable in public speaking role
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills;
  • Excellent report writing and demonstrated track record in presenting to small and large groups;
  • Project Management experience and application of methodology is essential;
  • Good analytical skills for complex problem solving
