POSITION DUTIES:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Parks Customer Experience, the Coordinator, Community Programs is responsible for the development, coordination and delivery of community engagement initiatives, parks programs and community outreach activities within the City’s Parks Maintenance & Forestry division.

This position fosters community pride, environmental stewardship and active use of park spaces, by developing and implementing high quality programs for residents, schools, community organizations and local partners within Brampton’s parks and green infrastructure.

The Coordinator supports initiatives related to environmental stewardship, volunteer engagement, community events and public education while ensuring programs align with divisional priorities, the City of Brampton’s strategic plan and broader environmental sustainability goals.

 

  1. Community Engagement
  • Develop and coordinate community programs that promote stewardship, environmental awareness and active use of Brampton parks.
  • Lead the delivery and administration of park programs such as the Community Gardens program, volunteer outdoor rink and tree planting initiatives, parks clean up events and environmental education programs.  
  • Build relationships with community groups, schools, non-profit organizations, businesses and volunteers to support park stewardship initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with other City departments to support integrated community programming, engagement and sponsorship.
  • Supports initiatives that encourage civic pride and local ownership of neighbourhood parks and open spaces.

 

  1. Environmental Stewardship
  • Represent the Parks Maintenance & Forestry Division at community events, outreach activities and stakeholder meetings.
  • Respond to public inquiries related to community programs, volunteer opportunities and Parks initiatives.
  • Supports environmental stewardship initiatives including tree planting events, restoration activities, pollinator projects and urban forest awareness programs.
  • Collaborate with internal staff, schools and community partners to deliver environmental education programs that promote sustainability and biodiversity.
  • Support the coordination of environmental awareness campaigns aligned with the City’s environmental sustainability priorities.
  • Work with various environmental groups and committees to promote community involvement in park restorations and natural heritage initiatives.

 

  1. Communications & Marketing
  • Research and develop outreach materials including program guides, promotional content, website updates and social media messaging related to Parks programming.
  • Evaluate marketing strategies and proactively identify opportunities for program enhancement and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Communications to support marketing and promotion of Parks programs and community events.

 

  1. Supervision & Volunteer Coordination
  • Recruit, train, schedule and supervise, full time and part time staff, ensuring related work practices are conducted in accordance with corporate policies, health and safety requirements and operational procedures.
  • Monitor and support labour relations and related administrative duties.
  • Coordinate volunteers and supporting community programs and outreach activities.

 

  1. Budget
  • Develop, prepare and manage budget expenditures and revenues, ensuring responsible use of resources.
  • Track program participation, volunteer engagement and operational statistics.
  • Prepare and compose grant applications, sponsorship opportunities and partnership agreements to enhance program opportunities.
  • Maintain program records, documentation and reports in accordance with corporate standards.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in related field (Environmental Studies, Forestry, Horticulture, Education) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in programming in a municipal environment, strategic environmental initiatives or community outreach programs.
  • Minimum 2-3 years supervisory experience, coordinating community initiatives and working with community partners, schools and/or volunteer organizations.

Special Requirements:

  • Knowledge of community engagement strategies and environmental stewardship programming. 
  • Strong public relations and stakeholder engagement skills. 
  • Ability to develop partnerships with community organizations, schools, and volunteers. 
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and various municipal systems. 
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License with access to a vehicle.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for community events and outreach programs.
