AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Manager, Advanced Manufacturing, the Senior Advisor serves as a strategic leader within the Market Expansion & Business Advisory Team, guiding Brampton’s efforts to help local companies diversify, scale, and compete in emerging sectors shaped by Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy. This senior role provides advanced expertise in market development, investment readiness, and industry engagement, leading initiatives that strengthen Brampton’s position in high‑value global supply chains.

The Senior Advisor develops and delivers innovative programming, cultivates a high‑credibility network of industry and government partners, and acts as a key bridge between Brampton businesses and opportunities in defence, space, and advanced manufacturing.

  1. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT

  • Provide hands-on advisory services to help companies assess readiness, develop new products, strengthen supply chains, and adopt new technologies.
  • Support businesses in identifying opportunities in space, defence, advanced manufacturing, and other strategic sectors.
  • Guide companies through federal procurement processes, including registration, compliance requirements, and bid preparation with the support of an external consultant.
  • Assist businesses in preparing for federal and provincial funding programs, including innovation, R&D, and export focused grants with the support of an external consultant.
  • Build and sustain credible, long-term relationships with companies, industry associations, sector groups, and public/private partners to enhance opportunity identification and client servicing.
  • Lead outreach activities, missions, and events to promote the Market Expansion & Business Advisory Team.
  • Demonstrate political acuity to navigate the complexities and high-profile nature of the national defence and aerospace sectors.
  • This position regularly engages with defence-sector firms, government agencies, and strategic industry partners involving commercially sensitive, confidential, and potentially controlled information. The incumbent is required to exercise a high degree of discretion, judgment, and professionalism in the handling of protected information.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to obtain familiarity with, federal security protocols, Controlled Goods Program requirements, and privacy legislation applicable to defence-related business development activities.
  • Ability to work with defence, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, and government stakeholders where security screening, non-disclosure obligations, and information handling protocols may apply.
  • Experience operating in regulated, security-sensitive, or government-partnered environments is preferred.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of sector trends, emerging technologies, and global market dynamics relevant to Brampton’s business community.
  • Develop sector specific tools (i.e. market entry guides and incentive pathways)
  • Conduct business visits. Collaborate with new and existing companies, to nurture relationships and ensure business growth services
  • Provide organized and proactive coordination of correspondence, documentation, and client follow-up.
  • Knowledge of the Canada Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) is an asset
  1. COMMUNICATION AND REPORTING 

  • Develop metric-driven goals in alignment with sector KPIs per project to measure success and impact of Market Expansion & Business Advisory Team initiatives.
  • Present visually compelling documents aligned with corporate visual identity guidelines.
  • Conduct presentations and reports for internal and external stakeholders, including senior officials and industry leaders.
  • Present customized content to businesses, partners, and sector groups to support market development and opportunity awareness.
  • Maintain documentation, correspondence, and approvals in accordance with policies and confidentiality requirements
  1. CUSTOMER SERVICE 

  • Respond and handle public enquiries; prioritize requests and escalate for resolution as required to meet corporate service standards.
  • Build and maintain a relationship with cross-functional departments, team, management and externally, to foster and support coordination.
  • Provides strategic advisory support to businesses, investors, industry partners, and senior stakeholders regarding economic development opportunities, municipal processes, and defence-sector initiatives.
  • Demonstrate corporate values at all times.
  1. CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on market development, innovation readiness, and sector‑specific opportunities in space, defence, advanced manufacturing, and emerging industries.
  • Support corporate initiatives related to business growth, innovation, and economic diversification.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for market development leads and projects, from opportunity identification to project completion.
  • Manage confidential files and sensitive business information with discretion
  1. BUDGET SUPPORT

  • Prepare, manage and take responsibility for assigned budget to meet corporate policies and guidelines.
  • Provides budget status updates to the Advanced Manufacturing Sector Manager as required.
  • Prepares budget submissions, business cases, funding proposals, and financial reports for senior management and Council consideration.
  1. TEAMWORK AND COOPERATION

  • Lead the Market Expansion and Business Advisory team to coordinate client support, align outreach efforts and ensure seamless delivery of advisory services to local businesses.
  • Work closely with the Economic Development Office and other internal departments to ensure alignment and program objectives are met.
  • Leads and collaborates with internal departments, senior leadership, and external partners to advance the City’s defence and strategic industries economic development objectives.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education:

  • Post-Secondary education in economic development, market development, investment attraction, international trade or related field.
  • Partial or full completion of EcD professional designation an asset.

Experience:

  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in economic development, market development, investment attraction, international trade, or a related field.
  • Proven experience providing one‑on‑one advisory services to businesses, ideally in growth, innovation, supply‑chain development, or technology adoption.
  • Experience preparing or supporting applications for federal and provincial funding programs, including innovation, R&D, and export grants.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain credible, long‑term relationships with businesses, industry associations, sector groups, and public/private partners
  • Experience working with SMEs in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defence, cybersecurity, or innovation‑driven sectors is an asset.

Special Requirements:

  • Strong business acumen with the ability to confidently advise companies and support complex market development activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of economic development and local businesses
  • An understanding of federal procurement or funding programs.
  • Experience participating in or organizing outreach activities, missions, events, or ecosystem‑building initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills, including managing documentation, correspondence, scheduling, and client follow‑up.
  • Knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal government structures and relevant legislation.
  • Ability to identify business needs, coordinate resources, and manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Exceptional English skills, written and verbal.
  • Additional languages would be an asset
  • G Class License and access to a vehicle is an asset.
  • Frequent travel required.
